It all began in 1980 when a small group of students realized their vision of creating an independent theatre. At first they moved as a travelling theatre from place to place, until they finally found their permanent home in the Nuremberg Cultural Centre for Children Kachelbau.

Fourteen people work at our theatre and we regularly employ guests (directors, actors, musicians, set/costume designers, theatre educators). Two to three new shows are premiered each season and the repertoire comprises at least ten further productions for the age group 4 – 12. Our productions tell stories about special moments in everyday life, about journeys, about life and death - stories which prove that children possess courage and that they have the guts ('Mumm') to listen to and watch many things, because that’s what life is all about.

Around 150 shows take place in our own theatre per season. We perform in many other theatres and institutions and regularly go on tour. We tour throughout Germany and abroad, presenting around 20 -30 shows a year.

panoptikum festival: Every two years since February 2000 Nuremberg becomes a centre for discovering new theatre forms and ideas. Throughout the city, in regular theatres and sometimes in unusual venues, one can experience exciting, moving, humorous and comical performances. We invite ten European productions to be presented to an audience made up of local citizens and theatre practitioners and producers from all over the world. A further ten productions from the regional children’s theatre scene (Nuremberg and Bavaria) are also part of the festival. The next festival takes place in February 2024.

Our productions Schneewittchen (Snow White) and Kaschtanka can be performed in English.

It is stories that human beings need like the daily bread. (Otfried Preußler)

Nuremberg culture-rucksack: on a yearly basis since 2009 a “cultural rucksack” is filled with theatre, dance, opera, concerts and museum visits, together with accompanying workshops for Primary 3 schoolchildren. With the help of numerous sponsors and charitable foundations around 1,500 children from 18 schools, who would otherwise have no contact with the arts, have gained direct experience of art and culture.

Our productions Schneewittchen (Snow White) and Kaschtanka can be performed in English.
